Director's Letter

In the spirit of building capacity for community based organizations that serve our Juvenile Justice Youth and their families, OYCR and the Center at Sierra Health Foundation (The Center) recently released a new funding opportunity. The Transform Youth Justice's (TYJ) Community-Based Organization (CBO) Capacity Building Initiative is our latest funding opportunity with a deadline for applications due by August 15, 2024, at 1 pm Pacific Time. The initiative will provide funding support to CBOs for 26 months to expand their capacity to meet the health needs of justice-involved youth through technical assistance provided by National Center for Youth Law, Public Works Alliance and The Center, and through learning community opportunities. Up to eight selected community-based organizations will receive $500,000 to expand services and supports, inclusive of diversion programs for justice-involved youth (ages 12 to 26) in four regions in California. Awarded organizations will also be encouraged to develop or strengthen diversion programs to advance health and racial equity for justice-involved youth in California. The Center will hold two webinars to review the request for applications. Participation in the webinar is not required but it is strongly encouraged. The Center will also host three office hour sessions to provide additional support on the RFA, application and submission process. Office hours are optional. Learn more about this funding opportunity here.

Voices of Youth Justice: A Q&A with Monterey County Deputy Probation Officer Aileen Bravo

OYCR is proud to partner with Monterey County to promote services for young people involved in the youth justice system. One of the people at the heart of this collaboration is Deputy Parole Officer Aileen Bravo, who has served clients for nearly 19 years, leading with dedication and compassion. Deputy Bravo supervises secure treatment clients and supports youth returning from the justice system, playing a pivotal role in their journey toward reentry.

With the support of OYCR’s County Liaison Cecilia Simmons, OYCR provides a wide array of services including education support, vocational training, life skills development, referrals to agencies offering financial assistance, and more. Monthly meetings between OYCR and the County ensure we continuously review progress, address needs, and set ambitious goals for the young people we serve.

For youth who are systems-involved, “this working relationship has given them hope and confidence in our support. This collaboration demonstrated our commitment to following through on our promises and providing them with all the resources we offer, encouraging clients to accept and engage with the services available”, Deputy Bravo says.

OYCR is excited to continue this vital work and expand our efforts to promote transformative justice in Monterey County and beyond. Read the Q&A with Deputy Parole Officer Bravo here.
